With this July Vaporwave History segment we are getting to the tectonic heart of the genre with two crucial releases from the earliest days:
Spend The Night With… Games (aka Daniel Lopatin and Joel Ford) came out on July 25th, 2010 via The Curatorial Club. The mixtape as a statement of purpose was big in the experimental DIY music scene in the early 2010s and this physical cassette release might be the first Vaporwave Cassette tape..
And of course the song that started it all… On July 19th, 2009 a video was uploaded to YouTube by OPN aka sunsetcorp. It was an eccojam of “Lady In Red” by Chris de Burgh and no one could’ve foreseen what this iconic track 𝒏𝒐𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 would spawn in its wake… You can listen to Episode 7 for a deep dive on each release!
