Vapor History: James Ferraro - Far Side Virtual (Oct 25th, 2011)

For our Vaporwave History segment on Episode 11, we covered an iconic album from one of the progenitors of the genre: Far Side Virtual by James Ferraro

On October 25th, 2011 the album Far Side Virtual by James Ferraro was released on the formative experimental label Hippos In Tanks- who at the time was also releasing music from the like of Autre Nu Veut, Arca, Grimes, Hype Williams and fellow vapor progenitor that I've mentioned in our history segments before: Games (aka Ford and Lopatin).

A succinct, albeit non-exhaustive, summary of the album was described in a 2020 Resident Advisor re-review: “the album is essentially a collection of recordings taken from an entirely digital environment, cobbled together on GarageBand and initially intended for release as a series of smartphone ringtones.” https://ra.co/reviews/24862

There is so much to say about the influence of this album- from the sounds to the concept to the album art.. go check out Episode 11 to get the story and find links to more pieces covering this release!
